How many pegboards do I need?

Divide the design’s width by the pegs along one edge of a board and round up; do the same for its height; multiply the two. A standard square board has 29 pegs a side for midi beads, 56 for mini and 15 for maxi.

Boards for common design sizes

Boards across × down, for a design measured in beads.

Design (beads)Mini (56×56)Midi (29×29)Maxi (15×15)
29 × 291 (1 × 1)1 (1 × 1)4 (2 × 2)
40 × 401 (1 × 1)4 (2 × 2)9 (3 × 3)
58 × 584 (2 × 2)4 (2 × 2)16 (4 × 4)
50 × 702 (1 × 2)6 (2 × 3)20 (4 × 5)
87 × 874 (2 × 2)9 (3 × 3)36 (6 × 6)
100 × 1004 (2 × 2)16 (4 × 4)49 (7 × 7)

Why it matters before you start

A design larger than one board is laid out across several, ironed in sections and joined afterwards. Boards butt together edge to edge, so you need them all at once, and a design one bead too wide needs a whole extra row of them. A 30-wide design on midi boards needs two boards across, the second with only one column used.

A pegboard is a work surface, not part of the finished piece, so there is no need to make a design an exact multiple of the board. It just helps to know.

Let MeltZoid count them

MeltZoid shows the number of boards across, down and in total for your design and bead size, and updates it as you change the width.
